The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has introduced a new range of welfare schemes for the year 2024-25 aimed at uplifting economically disadvantaged communities, especially working women. One of the key highlights is the free distribution of electric scooters to eligible women. These schemes aim to provide financial support, resources, and tools to improve livelihoods and promote self-reliance.

Focus on Working Women

Thousands of women in Bengaluru work in sectors such as garment manufacturing, housekeeping, sanitation, and small retail. Most of them come from low-income backgrounds and often struggle with basic resources like transportation. BBMP’s latest initiative is designed to support such women by helping them own an electric scooter — a step toward improving their independence and daily commute.

The purpose of the scheme is not just transportation support but to enhance the overall quality of life and encourage self-dependence among women and their families.

Available Welfare Programs Under BBMP

In addition to electric scooters, BBMP is offering several other welfare options as part of its comprehensive development strategy. The schemes include:

  • Free electric scooter distribution
  • Free sewing machines
  • Electric three-wheeler vehicles
  • Electric vending machines
  • Laptops for students
  • Financial assistance to buy flats (under the Amrit Mahotsav Housing scheme)
  • Grants to buy instruments for athletes and musicians
  • Support to open medical shops
  • Assistance to buy autos or cars
  • Reimbursement of school fees and aid for higher or overseas education
  • Seed funding for starting self-employment ventures

These schemes offer both financial and material support for a wide range of needs.

About the Free Electric Scooter Scheme

This initiative is especially meant for working women in the BBMP area, such as garment workers, sanitation workers, and others from similar professions. The goal is to provide them with an easy and independent means of travel between home and work.
